i. About the Book

A study of the goddesses who keep the quiet kingdoms.

Sisters of Shadow is the debut volume of the Living Goddess Series. It is a nonfiction mythology study profiling nine goddesses of death, darkness, and the underworld across world traditions, written for a dual audience: academic readers and spiritual practitioners.

The writing is scholarly in research, contemporary in voice. Rigorous footnotes with a feminist frame. Each chapter is a portrait drawn from primary sources, sacred texts, and living traditions. This is their book and it has been a long time coming.

The feminist analytical frame is not incidental. It is the spine of the book.

ii. The Nine

Four more volumes. A world of goddesses still to come.

Mothers of Myth book cover II Forthcoming

Mothers of Myth

Goddesses of Creation, Devotion & Grace

The second volume turns to the great mothers of world mythology. Creation goddesses, birth deities, and the cosmic forces of nurture across traditions that have honored them since the beginning of recorded history.

III In Development

Cosmic Queens

Goddesses of sky, sun, and celestial sovereignty

The women of the sky have been underestimated. Volume III profiles the solar and celestial goddesses whose dominion over the heavens preceded many of the male sky gods who replaced them.

IV In Development

Women of War

Goddesses of battle, strategy, and righteous destruction

Not violence for its own sake. The warrior goddesses of world mythology carry justice, strategy, and the moral weight of the battlefield. This volume is their record.

iv. The Author

Richard Fox

Richard Fox is an independent author, researcher, and practicing pagan based in Portland, Oregon. He spent more than fifteen years working in international media and large-scale cultural production before turning his attention to the project he probably should have started first: a book about goddesses.

He has conducted field research across Europe in mythology, folklore, and the sacred feminine, and has spent a frankly unreasonable amount of time in archives, temples, and cemetery gates in the name of due diligence. His pagan practice informs his research without replacing it. He believes these two things are not in conflict.

He is also a visual artist whose work explores mythology, the esoteric, and dark aesthetics. Sisters of Shadow is his first book. He is already working on the next one.
